The PK is a general-purpose machine gun designed in the Soviet Union and currently in production in Russia. PK machine guns used in Indian army in Russian T-90S Bhishma, T-72M Ajeya and BMP-2S Sarath and used as general purpose machine gun. PKM is also used by PARA Special Forces as section LMG. PKTS are Manufactured at Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli under license.

The PKM is a modernized, product-improved version of the PK. The upgrades, primarily aimed at reducing the weight, simplifying production, and facilitating easier operation. The receiver cover became more rigid due to lengthwise ribs.

The PKT is a further development of the machine gun. Modifications include the removal of the stock, a longer and heavier barrel, a gas regulator and an electric solenoid trigger. The PKT is usually fed from 250-round ammunition boxes.
